Kudos to all of the athletes who competed in the Olympic Trials Marathons in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday. The top three women and the top three men earned the right to represent the United States in Toyko, Japan this summer.
My favorite American marathon runner, Des Linden, just missed the medal stand. She was the fourth-place-finisher, which makes her the Olympic team's first alternate. In the event that one of the three women on the team is injured, is sick, or cannot compete for whatever reason, Linden shall participate in her place.
The American man in whom I had the most pronounced interest, ultra-marathon king Jim Walmsley, ran one hell of a race in his marathon debut. He finished 22nd in a time of 2:15:05. He did not make the team but he proved that he could do more than simply hang in a field of top-level marathon runners.
Congratulations to all who competed and best of luck in Tokyo this summer to the sextet who shall represent the United States. Enjoy it. You have most certainly earned it.
