But for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this morning I would be toeing the line on 16th Avenue, immediately adjacent to Bar A in Lake Como, for the annual NJFMBA Fallen Heroes 5K. Instead of running in the race - accompanied by several hundred other runners (including large contingents from fire departments from all corners of New Jersey) - I shall honor the memory of those killed trying to save others on September 11, 2001 by running solo.
Every year, it is a tremendous event in support of a worthy cause and I am privileged to be able to do my small part. This year, I will be doing my modest version of God's work while running solo...
...and without any Bagpipers around with whom I can celebrate afterwards.
