We should honor our veterans not just today but every day. There are a number of ways to do so and any number of excellent organizations through which you can offer the help, including the Til Valhalla Project, Veterans Village of San Diego, and Welcome Home Veterans of New Jersey.

Probably me just being old and crotchety (probably? HA!), but instead of folks all day today thanking me (and all vets) for my service, I'd suggest they try to live slightly better as Americans because I'm not sure any of us have been really good at that lately. If that were to happen I for one would feel more than sufficiently thanked.
