Slightly less than 3,000 innocents were murdered on American soil on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. Tragically, for each of them, the 11th of September was the last day of their lives. For six of the day's victims, the 11th of September was something much more. It was their birthday. Here is the story of one member of that most unfortunate sextet.

Amelia Fields headed to the Pentagon for work on Tuesday, September 11, 2001. It was her 46th Birthday. Mrs. Fields worked for the Department of the Army as a civilian employee, a secretary, and Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was just her second day working at the Pentagon. She had moved over there from her previous assignment at Fort Belvoir in Fairfax County, Virginia. On that terrible Tuesday morning, she was at work in her new assignment when the murderous cowards who had hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 earlier that morning deliberately crashed it into the Pentagon, killing her.
She and her husband, William, were high school sweethearts. They attended the same high school and met for the first time during study hall when they were juniors. They graduated high school together in 1973, married in 1975, and had raised two children together during their twenty-five-plus years of marriage. At the time of Ms. Fields' death on September 11, 2001, William Fields, Jr. was twenty-three and Shantell Fields was just eighteen.
On what tragically proved to be her life's final day, her husband had snuck out of the house during breakfast to place a birthday card in her car for her. Her birthday cake, chocolate, was baked and waiting for her arrival from work that evening so that her birthday could be properly celebrated, which of course it never was.
