Catherine A. Nardella, just 40 years old, worked for Aon Corporation in its offices on floors 98 through 105 of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. She was an Insurance Consultant. She was at her office on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, when American Airlines Flight 175, which had been hijacked shortly after it took off from Boston's Logan Airport earlier that morning, was flown into the South Tower between its 77th and 85th floors.
Ms. Nardella, who lived in Bloomfield, New Jersey, was her family's anchor. She was, as her sister Grace Samek described her, a person who always thought of others. By way of illustration, her parents spent Monday, September 10, 2001 in Atlantic City with a senior citizens' group. Ms. Nardella knew (a) they loved to have a cup of coffee as soon as they walked in their door; and (b) their electricity was out. She forged a solution. She purchased a carafe of hot coffee at Dunkin' Donuts and had it waiting for them when they got home. Her pastor, Msgr. William Hatcher, at St. Thomas the Apostle in Bloomfield, New Jersey provided another illustration of her character's quality. Every Sunday morning after Mass, she waited outside of the church for the same old man and then walked him safely down the church's steps.
A beautiful person deprived of the chance to grow old and of the chance to continue to spread good in a world that desperately needs it. How could anyone ever forget her? Let us all do our part to ensure no one ever does.
