Tonight, the President of these United States is pulling himself off the golf course long enough to do what it is he does best, which is holding a rally that shall undoubtedly double quite nicely as a Petri dish for the ever-expanding COVID-19 pandemic. DJT, irony-impaired as he is, shall be at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, celebrating Independence Day in the company of (he hopes) thousands of supporters. In the interest of full disclosure, tonight's shindig is not a formal DJT campaign event. If it was, it would not offer its attendees the allure of fireworks as a substitute for the normal DJT rally staples of race-baiting and pathological lying.
In spite of the fact that new COVID-19 cases have been reported at a staggering level in multiple parts of the United States over the past couple of weeks, the Governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, has flatly rejected the need for (a) wearing masks; or (b) social distancing at Mr. Trump's pep rally.
If the President of the United States decreed that he shall wear a mask tonight, then it is reasonable to presume that a not-insignificant number of the sheep (sorry, people) attending this event to support him would follow suit. If the President of the United States directed the National Park Service to require all attendees to wear a face covering and to maintain social distancing, then it is reasonable to presume that an overwhelming majority of the attendees would adhere to that directive.
If only.
There is, at best, an infinitesimal chance, DJT will ever issue such a directive even as those who have blindly followed his asinine lead on this issue have finally opened their own eyes. Governor Abbott of Texas, Vice-President Pence, I am looking at you both (and surprise, surprise Mr. Pence, even though we now are each wearing a mask, we can still look each other in the eye). Doing so would require a modicum of real leadership, in the absence of which men and women who have already sacrificed so much during this pandemic, this nation's essential workers, will continue to be forced into impossible situations again and again.
Ridiculous. Shameful. Embarrassing. Inexcusable...
...and wholly unsurprising.
